Awake: The Life of Yogananda draws heavily from Yogananda’s seminal tome, Autobiography of a Yogi, which has sold millions of copies worldwide and been designated one of the “100 Most Important Spiritual Books of the 20th Century.” Bollywood actor Anupam Kher breathes life into Yogananda’s written word for the purposes of the unconventional documentary, which tells Yogananda’s story in the first person. Rare footage of Yogananda provided by the Self-Realization Fellowship, an organization which he founded, is interspersed with footage of those he inspired and influenced, such as George Harrison, Deepak Chopra, and Ravi Shankar, among others.
